Peru

A trip through some of Peru's highlights

We started from Lima, where the best thing was the private Larco museum and the worst was the weather.  Flew to Cusco, and travelled round sites in the Sacred Valley, before spending 2 days at Machu Picchu. Then we travelled, by van, over the Andes and down through the cloud forest into the Amazon basin.  By boat into the Manu Biosphere Reserve staying at small tented camps where we were often the only visitors. Superb birdlife. Next to Puerto Maldonado past horrible mounds of sand and dirt left by industrial dredging for gold.  Flew via Lima to Jaen. Then by car to Gocta Falls, Kuelap and Leymebamba.  Finally a spectacular road trip down and up the Maranon gorge.  Flew back to Lima where we were delighted to be upgraded to business class for the flight back across the Atlantic.
